Tranmere story

Kevin Anthony Thomas was an English goalkeeper who played in the Football League for Blackpool, Tranmere Rovers, Oxford United and Southport. His birth date is commonly recorded as 13 August 1944, although Oxford United and some historical databases list 13 August 1945; sources place his birth in the Whiston/Prescot area of Lancashire.

Thomas was spotted playing locally in the Prescot area by former Southport player Verdi Godwin and joined Blackpool as an amateur in March 1966, turning professional that June. He made 12 Football League appearances for Blackpool before joining Tranmere Rovers in 1969. The TranmereWeb archive records 20 competitive appearances in 1969/70 and two more in 1970/71; 18 of his Rovers appearances were in the Football League.

After leaving Tranmere, Thomas played for Oxford United and later Southport, where he made 67 League appearances and was voted Player of the Year in 1974/75. A knee injury sustained in training in December 1975 eventually ended his Football League career, although he later returned to play for Barrow for five seasons.

Thomas later worked as a postman in Blackpool. He died at Trinity Hospice, Blackpool, on 9 October 2022.
